F for Fun

June 5, 2008

“Oof.” The sound of Badger collapsing face-down on the bed.

“Had a bit too much to drink?” I ask sleepily.

“No…maybe…probably,” he admits distractedly as he squirms around blindly until his head is settled on my stomach. “We walked to a house party after the bar shut. There was a trampoline.”

“Trampoline?”

“Outside one of the houses on the way to the party. Someone must’ve thrown it out. It was massive. We all bounced on it.”

I sit up. “What, all of you?”

“It was fun,” he mutters defensively, peeved that he has lost his pillow.

An image of a group of drunk 30-year-olds trampolining rowdily outside an innocent house at 1am pops into my mind. (Now is probably a good time to mention that I currently live in the suburbs, surrounded by retirees and families with 2.5 children.) I feel faintly horrified. Then a thought strikes me.

“Are you sure it had actually been put out for collection? And not just left out the front? Was it just on the lawn or actually out near the footpath?”

An embarrassed silence.

I add a terrified family peeking through the blinds to my image. The Neighbourhood Watch will probably hear of this. I start to voice my disapproval, but my half-asleep mind finally catches up.

“Wait! There might be a free trampoline close by?”

It is important not to be distracted from the bigger issues at hand.
